Host-pathogen interactions may be studied on many levels and there is a rapid development of molecular approaches for investigation of microbial mechanisms and host responses. Different model systems for studies of microbial infections will be the focus of this combined lecture course and experimental workshop organized via the Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS) at Umeå University (UmU) by Sun Nyunt Wai, Jörgen Johansson and Bernt Eric Uhlin.
Certificates warranting 1 ECTS are awarded to those who participate in both lectures and the experimental workshop.
The nematode Caenorhabditis elegans and the zebrafish Danio rerio are among the relatively simple and genetically tractable model organisms that are susceptible to a number of human microbial pathogens. Such models, in addition to tissue cell cultures and whole animal systems, are contributing to advances in our further understanding of different mechanisms and factors involved e.g. during bacterial infections.
A) The lecture course will describe and discuss the use of: C. elegans; zebrafish; chicken embryos; cell cultures, including organotypic models – organoids; mice; as well as in vivo imaging methodology, for studies of infections and host responses.
B) The experimental workshop will include laboratory work demonstrating the use of C. elegans, zebrafish and chicken embryos for studies of bacterial infections. Participation at the lectures is mandatory for workshop participants. Instructors: Dr. Marie Lindgren, Dr. Mitesh Dongre and Dr. Kyaw Min Aung (all MIMS & Molecular Biology, UmU).
The course and workshop will be held at the Dept. of Molecular Biology at Umeå University. Lectures will be held in "Major Groove" and laboratory sessions in th "Blue lab". The activity will start at 9 a.m. Monday 22 August and end at 12 noon Thursday 25 August.
A maximum of 18 participants will be admitted for the complete course and experimental workshop. Additional participants may register for the lecture course only. NDPIA members can register by filling out the form below. Non-NDPIA members can apply to the course/workshop by sending an e-mail to anna.holmstrom@umu.se and are welcome to participate on a first-come-first served basis if there are vacancies.
Registration deadline: 10 June, 2016.
