The NDPIA doctoral programme

The National Doctoral Program in Infection Biology and Antimicrobials (NDPIA), a joint initiative of six Swedish universities, promotes training and recruitment of PhD students and postdocs in infection biology and antimicrobials. In the end of 2024, the NDPIA organization was awarded a new funding period from VR for the coming 4 years, and the new NDPIA organization is affiliated with UCMR (Umeå Centre for Microbial Research) since 2025. NDPIA was established in 2014 and has been affiliated with MIMS (Laboratory for Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden, Umeå University) during the past 10 years and is a valuable collaboration partner that will keep supporting the research school.

NDPIA will offer advanced level courses taught by renowned national and international researchers providing current knowledge on each topic. The research school will host national infection biology network meetings, where these emerging researchers present their work to the infection biology community. These activities aim to strengthen both Swedish and global networks, facilitate knowledge exchange, and foster cross-disciplinary research and innovation. Overall, the NDPIA program will enhance the quality of research in infection biology in Sweden and will contribute to worldwide initiatives to fight infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance by fostering the development of the future scientists.

In summary, the NDPIA research school will provide training for the next generation of scientists to advance scientific knowledge, to foster innovation, and to develop the expertise required to address the global health threat due to infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance.

Examples of courses and workshops:

  • AI applications in infection biology
  • Microbiota and health
  • Fundamentals of basic and applied phage biology
  • Antibiotics and Antibiotic Resistance
  • Mosquito-borne viruses and their vectors
  • Live imaging of intracellular infections
  • Vaccine to vaccination: from science to society
  • Principles of infection biology
  • One health and emerging infectious diseases
  • Microbial immune evasion
  • Phylogenomic methods for pathogen and resistance surveillance
  • Designing clinical studies and trials on infectious diseases
  • Practical course in applying medical nanotechnology in infectious diseases

PhD students and postdoctoral fellows may become NDPIA members if they are enrolled at a Swedish university/institute or with one of our international partners and if they are active in research on infections and/or antimicrobials.
