Örebro

Research in the area of Infections and Antibiotics are performed by several research groups at Örebro University, many of which belong the Life Science Centre and Inflammatory Response and Infection Susceptibility Centre.

A strong research area at Örebro University is gastrointestinal inflammation, with research focusing to understand the regulation of mucosal immunity in different inflammatory states as IBD, IBS and colitis. Also the ageing gastrointestinal microbiome and its effect on immunology is studied.

A key research platform at Örebro University is Inflammatory Response and Infection Susceptibility Centre (iRiSC) which is a collaborative network of researchers at Örebro University and Örebro University Hospital and other national and international research groups. The research platform is broadly divided in the themes; (i) Bacteria-induced inflammation, (ii) Virus and immunity, (iii) Inflammatory-mediated diseases and (iv) Sterile inflammation. The research at iRiSC is focused on understanding response to stimuli and stressors i.e. microbes and their pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) as well as danger-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs).

Moreover, The System Immunology and Microbiology (SIM) research team investigates the mechanisms behind the cellular responses to pharmaceutical and antibiotic contamination in the environment using bacterial, nematode and human cells as model systems as well as the potential use of probiotic Lactobacillus species to modulate these responses.
