This four-day intensive course provides a broad and connected view of antibiotic resistance, from the microbe’s perspective to a clinical and applied perspective, with a One Health approach in focus. Participants will move from molecular mechanisms in bacteria to clinical use, diagnostics, and communications, among other topics. The course covers how antibiotics work, how resistance develops, and how it spreads, as well as modern diagnostic methods, and current paths for new antibiotics and alternative therapies. To enhance the learning experience and networking, this course also includes interactive group work and scientific poster presentations by the attendees.

On completion of the course, the student should understand:
the molecular biology underlying antibiotic resistance
the modes of action of antibiotics
the mechanisms driving the evolution and spread of resistance
strategies for the appropiate use of antibiotics and the prevention of resistance
the processes involved in the discovery, development, and approval of antibiotics
methods for detecting and determining antibiotic susceptibility and resistance
emerging anti-infection and treatment strategies
approaches to effective public communication

Participants will also have the opportunity to:
present and discuss their research with colleagues
