Antibiotics and Antibiotic Resistance Course 2024

Antibiotic resistance is a major global public health concern that threatens the use of modern medical therapies to fight infectious diseases. Do you want to learn more about this global threat and its origins and how scientists are addressing its effects on public health? Then, this course is for you.

Course Summary

This five-day intensive course introduces antibiotic resistance from a microbial perspective and from a clinical – One Health perspective. The course gives an in-depth overview on the modes of action of different antibiotics and how microbes resist the effects of the antibiotics, on diagnostic methods to detect known and novel resistance genes, on the origins of resistance genes and the biological cost of resistance for the microbe, and on modern methodology for new antibiotic development and alternative therapeutics for infectious disease.

Have a look at the preliminary course schedule.

On completion of the course, the student should learn:
  • molecular biology of antibiotic resistance and investigations thereof
  • modes of action of antibiotics
  • mechanisms of resistance (origins and gene transfer)
  • strategies for focused use of antibiotics and prevention of AMR
  • antibiotic discovery, development and approval
  • detection and determination of susceptibility
  • novel anti-infection strategies
In addition to lectures, participants will also have an opportunity
  • to discuss their research with colleagues
  • to build their national and international scientific network

Who is it for?

The course is tailored for young researchers and is organized by the Swedish National Doctoral Programme in Infections and Antibiotics, NDPIA. The lectures will be presented by internationally leading scientists and students will have opportunities to present and discuss their research in poster walks and to discuss and network with the invited lecturers and other course participants.

The number of participants is limited to 30.

Costs and Co-funding for Travel

The course, full board (accommodation in single rooms) and travel are free of charge for NDPIA PhD students and postdoc members who participate in all activities. Associate members can attend the course, but need to cover their own travel and board (10.500 SEK).

Please do not make any travel arrangements before receiving confirmation of admittance. Before booking your travel, you should read the NDPIA guidelines for co-funding of travel costs.

In Case of Oversubscription

If the course is oversubscribed, PhD students are prioritized. Priority will also be given to applicants in relation to how relevant it is for the applicant to participate in the course based on the topic of the personal research project and their motivation in the application form. We are also aiming for an even distribution of participants from different research groups and universities.

Cancellation Policy

The registration for this course is binding, and you are required to join the full five days to register. Cancellation of participation is free of charge until 14 February. However, from 15 February a cancellation fee of SEK 10500 (cost for the full board at Stora Brännbo) will be applied.
