A summary of the National Infection Biology/Microbiology Meeting 2019 – 14-15 October

The fifth network meeting of the National Doctoral Programme in Infections and Antibiotics (NDPIA) was held in Aronsborg (Bålsta) 14-15 October, 2019. For this meeting, NDPIA joined forces with the National Infection Biology network (NIB) and Swedish Society for Microbiology (SE-SFM) to co-organize a National Infection Biology Meeting. The long-term goal is for these networks to continue organizing joint NIB-meetings biannually. The meeting had more than 110 participants. This co-organized meeting provided an opportunity for Swedish researchers working within infection biology to network and to find collaborators with common interest.

The keynote speakers included:

  • Raphael Valdivia (Chlamydia, Duke University, USA),
  • Jost Enninga (micropinosomes Salmonella, Institute Pasteur, France),
  • Joan Geoghegan (S. aureus and atopic dermatitis, Trinity College, Ireland),
  • Eva Gluenz (Leishmania, University of Oxford, UK),
  • Susanne Häussler (Pseudomonas aeruginosa transcriptional profiling, Rigshospitalet, Denmark),
  • Helle Krogh Johansen (P. aeruginosa adaptation, Rigshospitalet, Denmark),
  • Mikael Sellin (Salmonella invasion, Uppsala, Sweden), and
  • Boris Striepen (Cryptosporidium, University of Pennsylvania, USA).

Along with the invited speakers, 22 short oral presentations on a wide-variety of topics in infection biology were selected. The posters (61) were presented via poster walks, which included a short presentation of the main findings of the work followed by a short question period. The poster walks were done in groups and lots of lively conversations were heard in the poster areas.

A “Meet the Speakers” event was scheduled after the lunches. Small groups of students met with speakers of their choice to discuss scientific topics or experiences. This provided a wonderful opportunity for students to meet face-to-face with outstanding researchers to discuss infection biology.

The abstract book for the meeting can be found following this link.

Many thanks go to the organizing committee:

Oliver Billker, Umea University, MIMS
Eva-Maria Diehl, Umea University, MIMS/NDPIA
Ake Forsberg Umea University, NDPIA
Fredrik Kahn, Lund University, NDPIA
Keira Melican, Karolinska Institutet, SFM
Barbara Sixt, Umea University, MIMS
Staffan Svard, Uppsala University, SFM

The next co-organized NIB meeting is tentatively scheduled to be held in the Fall of 2021.
See you there!

New course available: Visualize Your Science

Learn how to think visually about your research

This course is open only for NDPIA members.

When: May 5th until August 12th with no scheduled sessions between June 19th and August 7th

Registration deadline: May 2

Course instructor: Andreas Dahlin, scientist and founder of Visualize Your Science

Link to the course webpage: https://www.visualizeyourscience.com/pages/vys-course

This course is designed for PhD students and postdocs who want to improve their skills in drawing images/figures for scientific posters, presentations, and publications. The course consists of tutorial videos, home assignments and four scheduled face-to-face feedback sessions online. Students progress from a beginner to an advanced level in visual rhetoric and in use of an illustration software of your choice.

Mosquito-course scheduled for June 2020 has been cancelled

We are sorry to announce that due to the current pandemic, the NDPIA have decided to cancel the mosquito-borne pathogens and their vectors course that was scheduled to take place in June, 2020. The plan is to run the course next year instead but no date has been set. Any information about the course will be announced here on ndpia.se.

Online course on Effective Collaboration in Research still available

We would like to remind all NDPIA members of the online course on Effective Collaboration in Research from Nature Masterclasses that our collaborators at the National Graduate School in Infection Biology and Antimicrobials (IBA) in Norway opened for us. It is a pre-recorded, web-based course that may be taken at your own pace.

Online Writing Retreat with Mathew Stiller-Reeve – LIMITED NUMBER OF SPOTS!

The Norwegian National Graduate School in Infection Biology and Antimicrobials (IBA) has a limited number of openings for an online writing workshop that they are hosting and that starts on Monday April 20th. IBA has kindly opened the remaining course spots to NDPIA students.

Online Writing Retreat with Mathew Stiller-Reeve

IBA welcomes you to a 1-week online workshop on scientific writing! This course is meant to provide a virtual space to meet up, learn and talk about your writing during these unconventional times. Join in to learn about writing, to get motivated and to socialize.

If you are interested, please send an email as soon as possible to Debra Milton debra.l.milton@umu.se and she will give you instructions for how to register for the course. Again, there are a limited number of spots left – so it is a first come first served policy.

Update and invitation to online course

Dear NDPIA members,

We hope that you all are well and that you are settling into the changes in our work routines due to the coronavirus.

Due to the current situation caused by the pandemic, we are seeking new ways in which to continue to meet the goals for NDPIA. Our collaborators at the National Graduate School in Infection Biology and Antimicrobials (IBA) in Norway has opened their online course on Effective Collaboration in Research from Nature Masterclasses for NDPIA members. This pre-recorded, web-based course may be taken at your own pace.
